01 / Plantain
A Crop That Became Part Of Our Early Journey
Plantain played an important role in the early development of our cocoa plantation. When we began establishing cocoa, plantain was introduced as an early shade crop for the young cocoa trees.
We planted approximately 70,000 plantain suckers alongside our initial cocoa planting. The experience would later become an important lesson in understanding the relationship between crops, trees, soil and climate.
A Lesson From The Farm

Our early plantain and cocoa planting faced an extremely difficult period of drought. We lost virtually all of the plantain and a significant portion of our cocoa seedlings. Rather than abandon the farm, we reassessed our approach, replanted and began thinking more carefully about how our agricultural systems could become more resilient.
Diversification

Our approach to field crops is part of a wider strategy to diversify agricultural production. Alongside our primary cocoa operation, Gahiza Farms produces plantain, pawpaw and chili peppers.
Diversification allows the farm to develop multiple agricultural activities rather than relying on a single commodity. It is also part of our longer-term vision for an integrated agricultural enterprise.
